John Parish & Polly Jean Harvey. Dance Hall at Louse Point. Overview (current section).
There was the bravado of 50 Ft. Queenie on Rid of Me, then the flamenco drama of To Bring You My Love. Now we’re supposed to think of Dance Hall at Louse Point as a collaborative project with t John Parish, a longtime scene-maker in Harvey’s hometown of Yeovil, England, in whose band, Automatic Dlamini, Harvey once played in her pre-PJ days . On Taut, the album’s winning burst of Sonic Youth-style noise, she moans and rumbles like a guitar stabbed with a screwdriver. Lyrically on Dance Hall at Louse Point, Harvey picks up where she left off on To Bring You My Love - more cryptic fables like scenes from a foreign film.
After releasing the '90s rock masterpiece To Bring You My Love, Polly Jean Harvey deflected the immense pressure of a follow-up by teaming with guitarist John Parish for this 1996 collaboration.
Polly Jean Harvey is a master of reinvention. The Dorset born musician is revered for her original and abrasive, blues-tinged songs, yet this aspect represents only a part of her colossal output. She’s the only artist to have won the Mercury Music Prize twice, (with Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea and Let England Shake), has been awarded an MBE for contributions to music, and is a composer, poet and painter. From the first of two collaborative records with co-conspirator John Parish came this twanging bluesy piece. The emotive, scratchy guitar of Parish mixes perfectly with PJ’s vox in a performance that captures the air and space of the room in which it was recorded.
