Johanna Louise Spyri (née Heusser; German: ; 12 June 1827 – 7 July 1901) was a Swiss-born author of novels, notably children's stories, and is best known for her book Heidi. Born in Hirzel, a rural area in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland, as a child she spent several summers near Chur in Graubünden, the setting she later would use in her novels.

Heidi, written by Johanna Spyri in 1880 became a world-wide classic tale of a small orphan girl taken to live with her grandfather in the Swiss mountains. Heidi's love of the mountains becomes a defining passion directing her life. Heidi lives happily with her grandfather, who is seen to everyone else as a mean, rough old man. All is well until Heidi is taken away to live with a rich family and accompany the family’s daughter, a sick girl named Clara. Heidi is not allowed to go back home and starts feeling very homesick.

Swiss novelist Johanna Spyri's juvenile fiction work Heidi narrates the story of a lovable, nature loving little girl. Losing her parents at Five, Little Heidi lives with her aunt Dete. Days later she is sent to her grandfather Alm living in Swiss Alps. Heidi's charming lovable character creates positive changes to Alm's life and she is liked by all the neighbors. Young readers of this novel would love to live with Heidi and the nature of Alps.
