The Real Ramona is a studio album by Throwing Muses, released in 1991. It peaked at number 26 on the UK Albums Chart. NME named The Real Ramona the 35th best album of 1991. All tracks written by Kristin Hersh, except where noted.
The Real Ramona marked the perfect balance of Throwing Muses' angular songwriting and latent pop tendencies. Where Hunkpapa tried, somewhat unsuccessfully, to mix these elements, this album succeeds with surreal pop songs like "Counting Backwards" and "Red Shoes.
The Real Ramona (LP, Album). Rough Trade, Rough Trade. Throwing Muses was an American post-punk alternative rock band formed in 1981 by Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly. The music of The Throwing Muses is characterised by a style of varying tempos, changing dynamics and poetic surreal lyrics. From 1997 the Throwing Muses were less active, because Kristin Hersh focused on her solo career. The single Bright Yellow Gun was in 1994 the only (small) hit of the Throwing Muses in Netherlands. Why Throwing Muses is not as well-known as Pixies, based strictly on the strength of this particular album, is beyond me. While TM's songs here are not nearly as ground-breaking or ranging as some of Pixies' offerings, the musicianship and quality of their songwriting sound equal. I'm a huge fan of the "alternative" sound that cohered in the '80s and '90s, and as such, "The Real Ramona" had me just about salivating in pure joy. I can't wait to listen to the rest of the output produced by Throwing Muses and bandleader Kristin Hersh.
If Throwing Muses’ lengthy recording career is one with many peaks and few troughs, few would argue that their golden age was the Tanya Donelly years, her piercing, witchy vocals a perfectly eerie counterpoint to the feral roar and harsh, jagged guitars of her step-sister (and chief muse) Kristin Hersh. And of those Donelly-era records, the two key ones are those that bookend her tenure with the band. The boiling rage, howled trauma and convention-blind song structures of 1986’s debut Untitled still make for one of the most chokingly intense albums ever made. The Real Ramona was written by a bunch of talented weirdoes who’d spent the best part of the last decade screaming at people over demented time signatures. So yes, they wrote album of great pop songs, but when they did so they no way surrendered their intrinsic otherness – two decades of indie-pop later, it still sounds arresting.
The Real Ramona is an album by Throwing Muses. Released in 1991, it was the last album recorded by the band before the departure of founding member Tanya Donelly. The album marked the end of a time for the band, and a transition into a new one. The band's two heavyweights, Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly, had been the anchor holding the entire group down. After this album, Donelly left and formed Belly, taking the bassist on this album, Fred Abong, along with her. Hence, the album can be seen as an epitaph to the early days of the band. The Throwing Muses' sound is hard to describe,.
