Queen is the self-titled debut studio album by the British rock band Queen, released on 13 July 1973 by EMI Records in the UK and by Elektra Records in the US. It was recorded at Trident Studios and De Lane Lea Music Centre, London, with production by Roy Thomas Baker, John Anthony and the band members themselves. The album was influenced by heavy metal and progressive rock. The lyrics are based on a variety of topics, including folklore ("My Fairy King") and religion ("Jesus").
Today, it is common to require the actors to mime their hints without using any spoken words, which requires some conventional gestures. Puns and visual puns were and remain common. A charade was a form of literary riddle popularized in France in the 18th century where each syllable of the answer was described enigmatically as a separate word before the word as a whole was similarly described. The term charade was borrowed into English from French in the second half of the eighteenth century, denoting a "kind of riddle in which each syllable of a word, or a complete word or phrase, is enigmatically described or dramatically represented". Written forms of charade appeared in magazines, books, and on the folding fans of the Regency.
It's strange that Queen, the first album, was not a great success. Unique, exciting, early authentic Queen. Freddie's voice young and fresh, the Red Special riveting, those great whacking drums, the rumbling bass, all the parts are there and it rocks. Listening to this album 25 years later, it has not dated at all, and is still as exciting to listen to as it was when it was first released. As was the case during this period, every track is a gem. What set Queen apart from other bands, apart from the unique vocal pyrotechnics of Freddie Mercury, was the fact that they were all individually good songwriters, which meant that different styles abounded and there was no "sameness" that often occurs when all tracks are written by the same person.

When the Queen II album came out in 1974, those who heard it were impressed and spiritually uplifted. Queen had arrived in style and Freddie could give up his weekend job and concentrate on the great times that lay ahead. A month after releasing their debut album Queen returned to Trident Studios to commence work on the follow-up, tentatively titled ‘Over The Top’ – an idea that didn’t amuse EMI any more than ‘Dearie Me’ had for its predecessor.
