Barbra Joan Streisand is an album by Barbra Streisand, released in August 1971 on Columbia Records. It includes "I Mean to Shine", the first recording of a song written by the Steely Dan duo of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. The album also features production and backing work by members of the female band Fanny. The album reached on the Billboard Pop Albums chart and was certified Gold by the RIAA. The album peaked in Canada.

The cover of the album showed a "serious" Barbra (photo by Ed Thrasher) and spelled her name as she has spelled it since 1960-without the middle 'a'. The back cover (see scans above) featured a photograph of Streisand smiling. On the vinyl album, Barbra's name was spelled the "old" way: Barbara-with the extra "a".

On her follow-up to the comeback album Stoney End, Barbra Streisand tried to do for (or to) Carole King what she had done the last time around with Laura Nyro, to redo her material in a similar manner and essentially hijack it (while providing a big jump in songwriter royalties, of course). This was not so easy to do in the case of "Beautiful," "Where You Lead," and "You've Got a Friend," however, since, unlike the Nyro songs, by the time Streisand got to these tunes, they were already on King's own chart-topping album, Tapestry.
