The Blue Notes were a South African jazz sextet, whose definitive line-up featured Chris McGregor on piano, Mongezi Feza on trumpet, Dudu Pukwana on alto saxophone, Nikele Moyake on tenor saxophone, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Louis Moholo-Moholo on drums. After moving away from their home country in 1964, they established themselves on the European jazz circuit, where they continued to play and record through the 1970s.

The Blue Notes were formed by Harold Melvin in Philadelphia, PA in 1954. The group, which featured Harold Melvin, Donald Broody and Bernard Williams (3) signed with the small New York-based label Josie Records in 1954. In 1960 under the Val-ue Records label, they went onto record their first hit to reach the R&B charts with the single "My Hero". The group became Harold Melvin And The Blue Notes in the mid-60s; Bernard Williams (3) then formed his own The Original Blue Notes.

Produced by Olsen and Justin Raisen, the album was accompanied by music videos for the tracks, "Intern", "Shut Up Kiss Me", and "Sister" all co-directed or directed by Olsen. My Woman was recorded at Vox Studios in Los Angeles with producer Justin Raisen.
