The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is the cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. It is located in New York City at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue between West 110th Street and 113th Street in Manhattan's Morningside Heights neighborhood. Designed in 1888 and begun in 1892, the cathedral has undergone radical stylistic changes and interruption of construction by the two World Wars.
The Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom is the most celebrated divine liturgy in the Byzantine Rite. It is named after its core part, the anaphora attributed to Saint John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople in the 5th century. It reflects the work of the Cappadocian Fathers to both combat heresy and define Trinitarian theology for the Christian Church.

It would only be in New York City that they would prevail and win control over the cathedral building in 1926. The dispossessed community, now reorganized as the Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection, would wait another 17 years before enough funds were raised to purchase the former Olivet Memorial church on East 2nd St, our current home. The building was easily adapted to Orthodox worship. The benches were removed, and the templon (icon screen) was erected immediately.
Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (Leontovych). The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (Ukrainian: Літургія Івана Златоустого, tr. Liturhiya Ivana Zlatoustoho) is the musical setting of the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom by Mykola Leontovych. Consistent with Orthodox tradition, in which service is sung exclusively a cappella, the piece is set for unaccompanied choir and soloist. It was first performed in the Mykolaiv Cathedral at the Kiev Pechersk Lavra on May 22, 1919, with Leontovych himself conducting.
Dear Cathedral Members and Friends, The 2nd Street Cathedral needs your help. The City of New York Department of Environmental Protection confirmed that our water line has broken. We are responsible for its repair, and have contracted a plumber to gain the necessary permits to dig up the street and replace the pipes . Sunday, November 19 - Soup Kitchen at St. John the Divine. More details to follow. Al Ginsberg has been instrumental in making arrangements that allow our teens to serve in the community (thank you, Al!).
