This typically fine Bic Runga composition is untypically heavy on production; the multi-talented Miss Runga arranging the string section. In a contemporaneous interview with Natasha Francois for NZ Musician, Bic said the song refers to a chance meeting between friends and how fate brings people together.
For those who aren't familiar with her sound or have only heard & which is on this album there is a wider range to her music and a depth to her personality. Where Birds is a more soulful, restrained, and possibly "deeper" collection of her music, Beautiful Collision is at times upbeat and others sad with a few forays across musical boundaries you would not expect.
