He was troubled when he came back; for the dogs hadbarked and the folk run out from their houses; and he thought he hadheard a clatter of arms and seen a red-coat come to one of the doors. And as Alan spoke, he set his hands on his knees and looked at thebouman with a smiling mouth, and that dancing light in his eyes thatmeant mischief to his enemies. Perhaps the bouman was honest enough; perhaps he had meant to cheat, andthen, finding himself alone with two of us in a desert place, cast backto honesty as being safer; at least, and all at once, he seemed to findthat button and handed it to Alan.

Robert Stephens, Actor: Romeo and Juliet. Sir Robert's career fell into two distinct parts. In the '60s, he was widely regarded as the heir of Laurence Olivier. Born in 1850, Robert Louis Stevenson grew up in Edinburgh where his father was a well-respected lighthouse engineer. Stevenson almost followed his father’s example, studying engineering at Edinburgh University, but at twenty-one decided to become a writer. His early works consist of essays and travel writing, his first book, An Inward Voyage (1878), describes a canoe trip to Belgium and France. He spent time in the American west with Fanny before voyaging even further west, into the Pacific. His travelling also had the purpose of keeping the writer in warmer climates which were more suited to his health. His writing continued to show the importance of his native country and his work is often set in Scotland or uses Scottish themes. His short stories and later fiction such as The Master of Ballantrae (1888) show the writer’s continuing interest in the effects of Scotland’s history on its people.
Robert Louis Stevenson was born at Edinburgh on the 13 November 1850. His father, Thomas, and his grandfather, Robert, were both distinguished light-house engineers; and the maternal grandfather, Balfour, was a Professor of Moral Philosophy, who lived to be ninety years old. There was, therefore, a combination of Lux et Veritas in the blood of young Louis Stevenson, which in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde took the form of a luminous portrayal of a great moral idea. All our arts and occupations lie wholly on the surface; it is on the surface that we perceive their beauty, fitness, and significance; and to pry below is to be appalled by their emptiness and shocked by the coarseness of the strings and pulleys. In a similar way, psychology itself, when pushed to any nicety, discovers an abhorrent baldness, but rather from the fault of our analysis than from any poverty native to the mind.
He hasn't got a notion of how children ought to play, And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way. He stays so close beside me, he's a coward you can see; I'd think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow sticks to me! One morning, very early, before the sun was up, I rose and found the shining dew on every buttercup; But my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepy-head, Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed.
