Composer and conductor Anthony Collins (1893-1963) was an Elgar specialist not often talked about these days in critical circles. Born England and died Los Angeles, Collins graduated the Royal Academy of Music in London 1920 after service in the first world war. A violinist, he became the viola section leader in the London Symphony Orchestra. He broke from the orchestra 1936 and began a career as composer of film scores, the first being for "Victoria the Great" about England's Queen Victoria. Collins moved onto Hollywood in 1939, working for RKO for a half-dozen years. Like the LSO in Falstaff, the playing of the Strings of the New Symphony Orchestra, London and the sound are exceptional for the recorded dates, March and April 1952, respectively. For Elgarians with an interest in history, this is a recording worth seeking out and hearing again and again.

Anthony Collins (3 September 1893 – 11 December 1963) was a British conductor and composer. Anthony Vincent Benedictus Collins was born in Hastings, East Sussex in 1893. At the age of seventeen he began to perform as violinist in the Hastings Municipal Orchestra. He then served four years in the army. Beginning in 1920 he studied violin with Achille Rivarde and composition with Gustav Holst at the Royal College of Music.

Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, Sz. 106, BB 114 is one of the best-known compositions by the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók. Commissioned by Paul Sacher to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the chamber orchestra Basler Kammerorchester, the score is dated September 7, 1936.
