The Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, composed for the most prominent of Monteverdi's Venitian partons, the senator, Girolamo Mocenigo, was performed for the first time at the Mocenigo Palace near St Mark's Square, during the Carnival of 1624. Based on a passage from Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata, it is a crucial work in Monteverdi's output, partly because it is virtually the only clue we have of his approach to music for dramatic performance between the two Mantuan operas and the two late Venetian ones.

Combining consistently excellent performing and very good sound with some of Claudio Monteverdi’s most beautiful madrigals, this 1993 disc from William Christie and Les Arts Florissants is one of the best presentations of the Italian artist’s music I’ve heard. Parts of it are stunningly beautiful. The vaguely medieval opening of Mentre vaga Angioletta is phrased beautifully, the recording’s resonant acoustic helping with the madrigal’s shift from the austere and archaic opening to Monteverdi’s more characteristic style, with its chromatic harmonies and dramatic outbursts.
Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda (SV 153) is an operatic scena for three voices by Claudio Monteverdi, although many dispute how the piece should be classified. The piece has a libretto drawn from Torquato Tasso's La Gerusalemme Liberata ("Jerusalem Delivered", Canto XII, 52–62, 64–68), a Romance set against the backdrop of the First Crusade, when Godfrey of Bouillon conquered Jerusalem.
