Neil was recording an album in London with 10cc when he reconnected with Elton, who he first met in 1972. Elton had just started his own record label, Rocket Records, and offered to put out a Sedaka single in America. Since "Laughter In The Rain" was already a hit in the UK, that was the choice, and while Sedaka's name didn't carry much clout among radio station program directors, anything with Elton John's name on it was sure to get some spins

Laughter in the Rain is a 1974 British album by American pop star Neil Sedaka. It was released in the UK in 1974 on the Polydor label. The album was recorded in the US at Clover Recording Studios in Hollywood over the course of several sessions from November-December 1973. Several songs from this album were imported into the United States for the Rocket album Sedaka's Back in the fall of 1974.

Steppin' Out is a 1976 album containing the works of Neil Sedaka. In America it was the third and final album of a trilogy of albums issued by The Rocket Record Company. Rocket would issue a compilation album, Neil Sedaka's Greatest Hits, in 1977; but it contained no new material. Outside America Steppin' Out was issued on the Polydor label. In 1998, the Varèse Sarabande label reissued Steppin' Out and included four bonus tracks.
