Illinois (or Sufjan Stevens Invites You To: Come On Feel The Illinoise) is the second album in the so-called 50 States Project, which later turned out to be a stunt. The album focuses on Illinois and includes some things from Sufjan’s past as well. The artwork for the album originally included Superman but was eventually replaced (or, on some albums, flat-out removed). Contrary to popular belief, this is not because DC Comics filed a cease and desist
Both records inadvertently validate East Coast stereotypes of tough Midwestern values: This is earnest, hard-working music, morally rooted and technically precise. Still, Stevens has always been a folk singer more in theory than in practice. He routinely ditches folk's scrappy, stripped-down aesthetics, but consistently embraces its e unanimity. Musically, Illinois is strange and lush, as excessive and challenging as its giant, gushing song titles. Despite employing a small army of backers (including a string quartet, the Illinoisemaker Choir, drummer James McAllister, trumpeter Craig Montoro, and a pile of extra vocalists), Stevens is more forefronted than on the comparably solo Seven Swans.

The Avalanche (styled The Avalanche: Outtakes and Extras from the Illinois Album! on the cover) is a 2006 album by indie rock singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens, consisting of outtakes and other recordings from the sessions for his album Illinois, released the previous year.
In 2002, Sufjan Stevens declared his intention to record an album for each of America’s 50 states. He never made it past this second attempt, presumably because it would be nearly impossible to realize the concept so perfectly ever again. Here, he folds Prairie State iconography into brutally intimate narratives as effortlessly as he builds simple, folky foundations into exquisite orchestro-rock excess. Illinois is an audacious spectacle, offering up grand anthems ( Chicago ) one moment and sympathetic laments for serial killers ( John Wayne Gacy, Jr. ) the next. Illinois Sufjan Stevens.
The centerpiece of course, is the title track, "The Avalanche", a song intended for the leading role on "Illinois", but eventually cut and placed as a bonus track on the vinyl release. Almost every song on "Illinois" has a counterpart on this outtakes release.
