I find that Sir Georg Solti's Wagner interpretations got mellower and more careful as he got older, with a gentler approach. His 1985 Lohengrin is perfectly conducted: he takes his time (as he should) over the opening prelude, he is quite relaxed but never detached, and his command of the score is masterly.

I found Norman Bailey's performances in Der Fliegende Hollander and Die Meistersinger very strong, and George London a bit coarse in Das Rheingold. Parsifal Act II features strong vocal performances across the board, notably including Lucia Popp and Kiri Te Kanawa among the Flower Maidens. Solti's reading of the Act's opening and closing music is more urgent than for most of the opera and more typical of his style elsewhere, and the contrast is very effective.
