So it makes sense that Mars would try to harness that same energy on his third studio album, 24K Magic (out Friday, 1/2 out of four), a sleek, chest-puffing call to the dance floor that aspires to be nothing more than a feel-good Friday night soundtrack. It's a natural evolution for the Grammy-winning showman, who broke big as a reggae-tinged Motown crooner on 2010 debut Doo-Wops & Hooligans, before transitioning to bawdier, jauntier fare on 2012's Unorthodox Jukebox. But unlike the classic R&B he strives to emulate, it's also oddly aloof. Mars too often relies on clichéd lyrics and phoned-in vocals, and shies away from the vulnerability that endeared him to fans on ballads Grenade and When I Was Your Man.
