Strauss: Don Quixote, Till Eulenspiegel. That's not to short change the top-flight musicianship of Brazilian cellist Antonio Meneses, who won the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1982, and The BPO's first violist Wolfram Christ. It's worth remembering that Don Quixote is a tone poem, not a cello concerto, and there's a long tradition of assigning the woeful knight and Sancho Panza to first-desk soloists rather than visiting virtuosos.
Don Quixote, Op. 35 is a tone poem by Richard Strauss for cello, viola, and orchestra. Subtitled Phantastische Variationen über ein Thema ritterlichen Charakters (Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character), the work is based on the novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. Strauss composed this work in Munich in 1897. 1965 – Pierre Fournier, Giusto Cappone, Herbert von Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic – Deutsche Grammophon. 1972 – Lorne Munroe (cello), William Lincer (viola), Leonard Bernstein (conductor), New York Philharmonic. 1986 video – Antonio Meneses (cello), Wolfram Christ (viola), Herbert von Karajan (conductor), Berlin Philharmonic – SONY. 2003 – John Sharp (cello), Charles Pikler (viola), Daniel Barenboim (conductor), Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Mark-Daniel Schmid, The Richard Strauss Companion.
Enter the extravagant universe of Cervantes’s Don Quixote in Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker under the direction of Herbert von Karajan, legendary personality of the 20th-century European musical scene. Strauss gives musical life to some of the novel’s most famous episodes, including the battle with the sheep, the windmills, and the encounter with Dulcinea
