Arriving some 14 years after Ace's second volume of Pee Wee Crayton's Modern material, this collection is long overdue. Indeed, as Dick Shurman points out in his liner notes, this release is something of a tribute to Ray Topping, the Ace archivist chiefly responsible for the label's previous Crayton CDs, which did a good job in restoring Crayton's reputation
Pee Wee was one of the first blues artists to be really kind to me, in 1970, by which time I was already immersed in his music, and we had a happy mutual admiration society until his death in 1985. He felt he’d gotten short shrift from history, so the chance to honour his memory and legacy and confirm all the things that make him worthy is an extra special privilege and joy. And Pee Wee’s widow Esther remains devoted to Pee Wee, a bulwark for her family and preparer of the most legendary lemon cake in Los Angeles. Hanging Out Partying Reminiscing. Texas Blues Jumpin' in Los Angeles: The Modern Music Sessions 1948-1951.
Texas Blues Jumpin' In L. .has been added to your Cart. This third volume (28 tracks taken from 3 1/2 hours of acetates) of Pee Wee Crayton's recordings for the Modern label are from the years 1948-1951. The mono sound is very good-clean and warm with that period studio sound that adds authenticity to the sound from all those years ago. The 18 page booklet has an essay by noted blues scholar Dick Shurman, who also annotated Vol. 1 in this Crayton series. Also included is a chronological list of recordings and some great period photos and graphics-the usual for the Ace label.
