Best of the Hi Records Years is an excellent collection of Otis Clay's early-'70s heyday, featuring such songs as "If I Could Reach Out" and the classic "Trying to Live My Life Without Yo. Although these recordings aren't quite as gritty as his singles for One-derful! and Cotillion Records, the tight Hi rhythm section keeps things at a steady, sexy groove, so they are nevertheless excellent and deeply soulful and are arguably his best work, making this compilation an essential addition to any comprehensive '70s soul collection.

Listen to albums and songs from Otis Clay. As a member of the respected Sensational Nightingales, Otis Clay honed his gospel training. Combining this later with the gritty production of Hi Records maestro, Willie Mitchell, Clay emerged with some of the most dedicated soul this side of Al Green. His profoundly moving raw vocals stayed true to the sound and spirit of the Muscle Shoals southern style. After his peak popularity in the mid Â70s, he continued recording, leaning towards his gospel roots and still performing inspired live shows.
