Tommy is a soundtrack album by The Who with contributions from numerous artists. The soundtrack was used in the 1975 Tommy film that was based on the original album that was released by The Who in 1969. Pete Townshend oversaw the production of this double-LP recording that returned the music to its rock roots, and on which the unrecorded orchestral arrangements he had envisaged for the original Tommy LP were realised by the extensive use of synthesiser.

There were several new songs written especially for the movie that weren't on the original album. Among those were "Champagne", "Mother and Son", and "TV Studio". Also, a couple of songs were re-written with either new lyrics ("Pinball Wizard", "We're Not Gonna Take It", and "Do You Think it's All Right?"), or new titles ("1951" was originally called "1921" on the original release of "Tommy"). a new guitar solo (presumably Pete Townshend recorded in 1993 during THE WHO'S TOMMY ON BROADWAY Original Cast Recording recording sessions) laid atop the instrumental breakdown in the song "1951 (You Didn't Hear It)".

This was the first album that I heard from The Who. I still consider it as a very good album, but I like more other albums by The Who, which in my opinion are better ("Who& Next", "Quadrophenia" and "Who Are You"). Still, I consider this album as a pioneering effort and I also think that the very new concept of a "Rock Opera" was "Progressive" in meaning, and the music in this album influenced Prog Rock, because it opened the minds of the Rock musicians to try to create long musical works based in stories
