Though historically invaluable, the first volume of British archive label Pearl's four-volume collection of original Broadway cast recordings of songs from 1890-1920 suffered from two problems inherent in the material: first that a show's most popular songs might never have been recorded by members of the original cast, and second that, even if recorded, the performances were often made. many years after the shows ran on Broadway.
