The ‘Trout’ Quintet is the first of Schubert’s four large-scale works to incorporate a series of variations on one of his songs. The others are the ‘Wanderer’ Fantasy for piano, the ‘Death and the Maiden’ string quartet; and the C major Fantasy for violin and piano D934, with its variations on the setting of Rückert’s ‘Sei mir gegrüsst!’. Of the four, the Quintet is the most relaxed and easy-going. Von diesen vier Werken ist das Forellenquintett das entspannteste und unkomplizierteste Stück. Eigentlich ist es Hausmusik von höchster Qualität, und die Gestaltung der Klavierstimme, die sehr oft beide Hände in Oktavparallelen führt, schafft ein Höchstmaß an Klarheit und Leichtigkeit, während sie gleichzeitig den Klang der Primo-Stimme eines anderen Hausmusikgenres beschwört, nämlich des von Schubert so sehr geliebten vierhändigen Klavierspiels.
