The Rookie" (Dick, Watson) – 5:35. Zoo Class" (Dick, Watson, Duguid) – 5:23. The Lost Plot" (Dick, Turrell) – 5:10. Old Crow" (Dick, Watson, Duguid) – 5:20.
Fish is making the best out of his lowering voice on this album, which could be seen as a sign of maturity. This album rocks out, but it mostly relies on mellower tracks and simpler songwriting - something reminiscent of Ian Anderson's own dealings with an aging voice and more introspective interests. Fish's focus is not on extended suites and shifting moods anymore, but elegant, intelligent songs, and in that regard he deserves an A for Field of Crows. His backing band has undergone yet another reshuffle. Guitarists Bruce Watson and Frank Usher are back.
Only for completionists (1%). Not really a progressive album in any real sense of the word, but a really strong rock album with progressive tendencies is what we have here. The Field is easily the strongest track on the album, with sensitive and imaginitive lyrics, as well as a sensational build-up of instruments from each of the musicians that help Fish create a sense of mystery and magic. The Celtic feeling is strong on this track, with Fish creating more music that gives nods to his homeland of Scotland.
This is Fishs twelfth studio album in a music career that has spanned over 23 years and is his eighth solo project since leaving Marillion in 1988. I am very proud of this album and if it is my last one then its a good one to leave on!" says Fish. Recorded at Fish's house in East Lothian, it is an album that is bound to delight his fans and surprise others. Strongly Blues influenced (especially Zoo Class) with a beautiful ballad (Shot the Craw), the raw rock sound is punchy and anthemic, with tracks like Old Crow begging to be played live.
