Coltrane is an album by jazz musician John Coltrane, released in 1957 on Prestige Records, catalogue 7105. The recordings took place at the studio of Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack, New Jersey, and document Coltrane's first session as a leader. It has been reissued at times under the title of The First Trane!. As a result of his exposure as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, Prestige Records owner and producer Bob Weinstock offered Coltrane a recording contract.

Considered by many to be his finest single album, Coltrane finds John Coltrane displaying all of the exciting elements that sparked brilliance and allowed his fully formed instrumental voice to shine through in the most illuminating manner. On tenor saxophone, he's simply masterful, offering the burgeoning sheets of sound philosophy into endless weavings of melodic and tuneful displays of inventive, thoughtful, driven phrases. Coltrane also plays a bit of soprano saxophone as a primer for his more exploratory work to follow.

RK: Andrew’s point about this being a turning point album is dead on. You can hear the shift happening in their playing. The band was moving away from the straight ahead (as straight as they ever got) swing to a more modal structure and then into free improvisation. Naima is but one highlight on an album absolutely bursting with classic cuts, and it’s also one of many beautiful tracks Coltrane wrote and played during his career. But for me, it’s one of his best, because his emotions are palpable as soon as his sax wheezes into your ears. It’s enough to give you chills the first time you listen.
