Pure and Simple is the ninth studio album by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, released in 1994. Pure and Simple was the first album to feature a new line up of Blackheart band members since the departure of longtime guitarist Ricky Byrd and bassist Kasim Sulton after the release of Jett's last album, Notorious. This new line up consisted of legendary bassist Kenny Aaronson and lead guitarist Tony "Bruno" Rey. Pure and Simple would be the last Joan Jett & the Blackhearts release until 2006's Sinner
Flashback is a collection of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts odds and sods including 'I Love Rock N Roll' with the Sex Pistols, unreleased before Flashback was compiled. Other rare tracks featured on Flashback are 'Cherry Bomb' live with L7 and 'Bad Reputation' live. This album has been remastered and includes enhanced material including live footage of Joan performing 'Cherry Bomb' with L7, as well as other early footage.
Even though she vascillated between punky hard rock and smoothed-out arena-rock for much of the '80s, the disc accentuates her rebellious nature, making Flashback an effective introduction to her career. Recorded before Joan Jett formed The Blackhearts, the majority of the album features Jett backed by members of the Roll-Ups, with Lea Hart on guitar, Jeff Peters on bass and Paul Simmons on drums. Other tracks include well known musicians, such as the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones and Paul Cook, Blondie's Clem Burke and Frank Infante. After independently recording the album with Laguna, Jett took the record to a number of major record labels, none of which were interested in releasing the project.
Flashback is the eighth studio album, and a compilation album of outtakes and rare songs released by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. The album was initially released in late 1993 and was reissued in 1998 with a slightly different track listing. The 1998 version dropped five tracks from the 1993 release: "Summertime Blues", "Louie Louie", "Star Star", "Stand Up for Yourself" and "Call Me Lightning" and replaced them with "Real Wild Child (Wild One)", a live version of " Bad Reputation" and "Right 'Til the End",. Star Star" was included as an unlisted "surprise" track on the 1983 cassette release of Album, but was later removed after the original cassette was pulled from some stores because of non-labelled "explicit" track lyrics.
