MONO play the Horseshoe Wednesday (September 12). See listing. You want epic? How about swooping, melodramatic string section parts all over the place. There isn't much of a journey to be taken on For My Parents; the music doesn't develop, darken, or tell a story so much as it expands and deflates like a balloon.

For My Parents isn't likely to go down with your Slow Riot for New Zerø Kanadas or Spiderlands, but there are times when it seems to break new ground.

Japan's Mono have been exploring the margins of post-rock since 2006 when they collaborated with World's End Girlfriend on 2006's Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain, using electronics, strings, chorus, a pianist, and a saxophonist. 2009's Hymn to the Immortal Wind featured large string and wind sections, followed by the live festival performance Holy Ground: NYC Live in collaboration with the Wordless Music Orchestra under the conduction of Jefrey Milarski. Those albums showcased Mono's sound in transition from its thundering post-rock origins

Mono also collaborated with Japanese musician World's End Girlfriend in 2005, releasing a collaboration studio album in December of that year, on Human Highway, and with American band Pelican, releasing a split album with the band through Temporary Residence Limited in October 2005. Mono spent 2006 and 2007 touring Asia, America and Europe in support of You Are There. For My Parents was MONO's first record in eight years not to be recorded by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago. For My Parents, was released on 4 September 2012, through Temporary Residence Limited. The band's press release for For My Parents states "We hope that this album serves as a gift from child to parent. While everything else continues to change, this love remains a constant throughout time. The Last Dawn/Rays of Darkness: 2014–2016.

On latest album For My Parents, however, it remains as gorgeous as ever. Where some of their post-rock contemporaries like Godspeed You! Black Emperor might prefer alternately overwhelming and sometimes bleak approaches, or Grails might take a trip into more psychedelic headspaces, Mono offers a slow moving journey toward gracefully gigantic climaxes. For My Parents is a proper soundtrack for either coping with a crippling loss, or standing on top of the world in triumph. Going on 14 years as a band, Mono continues to firmly stake their position as house band to life-changing circumstances. Album · 2012 · 5 Songs. For their sixth studio album in roughly a decade, the Japanese group complements their own foundation (guitar, bass, piano, percussion, glockenspiels) with the slightly smaller Holy Ground Orchestra (strings, bass and percussion). For My Parents is a rich, enveloping work that weaves stealthy and subtle atmospherics with towering crescendos, sustained tension, and cinematic beauty, and is more a piece with modern classical music than rock

For My Parents is the new album by MONO, the Japanese quartet who – over the course of half a dozen albums in twice as many years – has followed their own muse, and in the process have become "one of the most distinctive bands of the 21st century. They are an instrumental rock band whose melodies have grown increasingly lyrical, with increasingly transcendent execution.
