Why Not Tonight?’ is a full-fledged Southern Soul masterpiece! Seminal southern soul from Jimmy Hughes – a classic Fame production from the early days of the Muscle Shoals scene – and definitely the kind of work that set the tone for countless imitations to follow! Jimmy Hughes sounds even better here than in his first batch of recordings for Fame – more carefully composed, and a bit less rocking overall – really hitting that sublime spiritual undercurrent that defined the sound of southern soul for the 60s! . Hughes only recorded one more album after this one, and the sensation is that we lose the opportunity to enjoy more of one of the most interesting voices of the R&B and Soul. I’m sure he would have recorded excellent Lp’s if he had continued with this so little explored blend that he was the master, is clear in this record.

Why Not Tonight picks up where that compilation left off and concludes our overview of Jimmy’s surviving Fame sides. We haven’t finished with him yet, either – later this year will see the first-ever CD release of his complete Volt discography, including 14 previously unissued tracks. Jimmy’s second original album provides the jumping off point, titled after his 1967 R&B Top 5 hit and comprised of tracks that had been recorded over the previous three years  . As with our first Hughes CD, we’ve added bonus tracks to the ten original tracks in the shape of singles not issued on LP and four originally unissued sides that Fame kindly exhumed from the vaults for us.

Jimmy J. Hughes (born February 3, 1938) is an American former rhythm and blues singer, whose biggest successes in the mid-1960s, notably his hit "Steal Away", were important in the early development of the Muscle Shoals music industry. Hughes, a cousin of Percy Sledge, was born and raised in Leighton, Alabama, close to Muscle Shoals. He began singing in a gospel quartet, The Singing Clouds, while at high school. In 1962, he auditioned for record producer Rick Hall at his FAME Studios

Why Not Tonight embraces Jimmy's original Fame/Atlantic album of that title plus seven non-album As and Bs and three originally unissued sides, two of which make their worldwide debut here. Disc: 1. 1. Why Not Tonight. 2. I'm A Man Of Action. Just like the first volume, this amazing Kent CD starts with the 10 track second album ("Why Not Tonight?") and fills in with the remainding singles-only and unreleased tracks: Why Not Tonight (Fame 1011a) I'm A Man Of Action (1011b) I Worship The Ground You Walk On (1006a) Neighbor, neighbor (version 2) (1003a) It Was Nice (6407b) Shippin' Around With You Midnight Affair (1000a) It's a Good Thing (1003b) I'm The Loving Physician (6410b) I Stand Accused.
