John Sinclair was a writer, activist and former manager of the MC5. He had been convicted a number of times for marijuana possession prior to an incident in 1969 in which he gave two joints to an undercover narcotics officer. In July 1969 Sinclair was given a 10-year prison sentence for the offence.
