Sugar Shack" is a song written in 1962 by Keith McCormack. The song was recorded in 1963 by Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs at Norman Petty Studios in Clovis, New Mexico. The unusual and distinctive organ part was played by Petty on a Hammond Solovox, Model J. The original instrument can still be viewed on display at the Norman Petty Studios today.
Sugar Shack is a well loved image in the Black community. But art critics have never liked it. Critics often call the painting black romantic art. This is the visual-art equivalent of the Chitlin’ circuit. This refers to a group of small Black nightclubs played by musicians before they hit the big time. The original Sugar Shack featured Durham radio station WRSC on a banner. Marvin Gaye asked permission to use Sugar Shack as an album cover. Marvin’s I Want You is an R & B classic. Ernie had to adjust the image to show references to the album. The cover image shows banners hanging from the ceiling containing names of the album’s singles. On March 25,1983, the TV special Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever first aired. The classic 1970’s television show Good Times approved this piece as representative of black life and culture.
Sugar Shack is his fourth album, and shows his growing confidence as both a songwriter and performer. Some Fun" shows off Fowler's acoustic side; it's a rocking country-blues with Scott Key's slap-happy syncopated brush work adding to the song's drive and bright, hedonistic message. Fowler's cheerful vocal gives the tune a playful feel. I Hope It's Gonna Rain" is a fatalistic, slow blues ballad. James," an R&B ballad, tells the story of a guy whose life is a long road of suffering and pain; his father was sent to jail while the boy was in grammar school his wife stole everything he ever owned, and he's slowly sinking into an alcoholic stupor, but Fowler manages to bring a bit of compassion to the tale, without.
