South London quartet Goat Girl have just signed to Rough Trade, but sound like they could’ve been on the label 35 years ago when they were releasing records by Raincoats, The Fall and Swell Maps - dirgey, spare and menacing. The group’s debut 7″ for the label is out October 7 and the song titles - Country Sleaze, Scum - further connect with the label’s path.

While Goat Girl are part of the same scene that has produced post-punk quintet Shame and wonky rock group Sorry, they’re quite different from their London peers. It’s an absurd and playful experience, like reading a book of André Breton poems while drunk on cheap cider. Unlike Pete Doherty and Carl Barât, however, Goat Girl aren’t interested in glorifying anything. Clottie’s droll storytelling has an intentionally off-putting effect; nobody’s going to move to London on the strength of this album. There’s an exhaustion in her voice, not to mention two separate songs titled I Don’t Care. She sounds as blasé as Lou Reed on a comedown, pissed-off but without the energy to shout.

The Goat Girl is a Greek fairy tale, known in many variants, collected by Anna Angelopoulou, Johann Gottfried von Hahn, and Georgios Ioannou. It bears many similarities to the French Donkeyskin. A couple had no children; the wife prayed for any child, no matter what. One day, she gave birth to a baby goat. She grew up as playful as any child. Her mother wished that her father could have a jug of water, and the goat said she could carry it, if her mother tied it to her horns

From the 19-song tracklist of short tunes to the complete disregard for standard song structures, Goat Girl’s self-titled is a punk album in demeanor, if not in style. The result makes for a far more fascinating record than initial singles would have led us to believe. In defying expectations, the band exceeds them.
