Ain't Living Long Like This is the debut studio album by American country music singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell, released in 1978 by Warner Bros. It failed to enter the Top Country Albums chart. The songs, "Elvira", "Baby Better Start Turnin' 'Em Down" and "(Now and Then, There's) A Fool Such as I" were released as singles but they all failed to chart within the top 40. Despite this, Ain't Living Long Like This is considered one Crowell's best and most influential albums
He slipped the handcuffs on behind my back Then he left me freezing on a steel rail rack Can't sleep at all in the jailhouse, baby I ain't living long like this. Grew up in Houston off of Wayside Drive Son of a car hop in some all night dive Dad drove a stock car to an early death All I remember was a drunk man's breath I ain't living long like this I can't live at all like this, can I baby
Texas native's debut album, released 40 years ago this month, established him as a top-notch singer-songwriter. In August 1972, 22-year-old Houston-born songwriter Rodney Crowell first arrived in Nashville, a passenger in fellow songwriter Donivan Cowart’s 1965 baby blue Chevy Impala. Much as it is today, the city was experiencing a major growth spurt. Urban renewal, an interstate highway system and the changing face of the Music City skyline were among the factors contributing to Nashville’s growing pains.
