As one would expect (and hope), the album starts out with the traditional adhan - the call to prayer. This is one of the few forms of music allowed by the Islamic orthodoxy, though it is in general not called by "music. Following is a pair of tracks featuring other forms of endorsed "music": Qur'anic chants. These take place both in solo form and in a straining, heated group form.
Islamic music may refer to religious music, as performed in Islamic public services or private devotions, or more generally to musical traditions of the Muslim world. The classic heartland of Islam is the Middle East, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, Iran, Central Asia, and South Asia, and it also included the medieval Iberian peninsula (al-Andalus). Due to Islam being a multi-ethnic religion, the musical expression of its adherents is vastly diverse.
From remote areas of Indonesia to southern Spain, this 17-CD box set is comprehensive in its scope of music made by those following the Islamic faith. The discs include Quran recitations, Sufi qawwali, the music of whirling dervishes, the folk music of Egypt, Andalusian sounds of Morocco, and recordings from Yemen, Tunisia, Turkey, Iran, and several other countries, some of which you may not have thought housed Muslim populations.
In regards to the various categories of Music and how to differentiate which are permitted and which are not, these can be broken up into four groups: 1. "Music" which contains both instruments that are forbidden and lyrics that are forbidden. 2. The ahadith and the verses of the Qur'an mentioned do not differentiate between the various categories of music. Thus, there is no difference between national and foreign music, original and non-original music, traditional and non- traditional music, etc. That which must be used as the measuring stick is if the music is one which would fall into the category of being considered as lahw (as was defined earlier) in which case it would be haram even if it was original or traditional music of a particular country.
