An Opera in Three Acts. Music by George Lloyd 1913–1998. Libretto by William A. C. Lloyd. Not staged since its première in 1934 and short London run in 1935, George Lloyd’s Iernin tells the story of a maiden turned to stone by puritanical priests, only to reawaken hundreds of years later and ensnare the heart of a betrothed Cornish nobleman. This is set against the backdrop of a soon to be occupied Cornwall and the struggle of its leader and people to retain their independence from the Saxon overlords. It is a story about the defence of the weak and society’s fear of change, but above all our.

Surrey Opera is a semi-professional English opera company based in Croydon, providing opera in Surrey, Sussex and Kent. The company offers opportunity to emerging professional opera singers, providing the opportunity to work with professional directors, musicians, designers and the Surrey Opera Chorus. Alumni of Surrey Opera include known singers Peter Sidhom, Russel Smythe, Susan Gritton and David Soar. While opera forms the majority of its repertoire, the company also performs operettas, musicals and soirées. Surrey Opera have gained a reputation for staging new or re-discovered operas such as the world premiere of Thelma by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Iernin by George Lloyd, not staged since its premiere in 1934. Their second world premiere production, The Life to Come was staged in September 2017. Composed by Louis Mander to libretto by Stephen Fry, it was based on . Forster's short story "The Life to Come".

But there is a composer whose 100th year has remained relatively under the radar. This year marks the centenary of English composer George Lloyd and to celebrate, Surrey Opera is staging a little-known opera by the Cornishman. On an appropriately wind-blown and rain-dampened Saturday evening, I headed to Trinity School Theatre in Croydon for a production of George Lloyd’s Iernin. Set in the wild and remote west of Cornwall, the three-act opera was inspired by, and composed in, the region where I grew up. Suffice to say it is a project close to my heart. Born in St Ives, Lloyd completed the opera in 1934 at the age of 21. With a libretto provided by his father William, it is a tale of paganism and seduction set against feelings of nationalist antipathy.

I do find that the heart goes out to this opera. Some of the causes may be suspect. Perhaps it is sentimental to allow knowledge of the composer's age at the time of writing (George Lloyd was 21) to influence one's response, but it does. Then there is the pleasure of seeing the work which enjoyed so much success followed by such complete neglect convincingly revived, with the composer, now as conductor, renewing acquaintance with his own music half a century later.
