Mozart is one of the cases where Karajan can be justly blamed for the hectic re-recording of his repertoire during the digital craze of the 1980s. I can say almost the same about Bruckner’s and Dvořák’s late symphonies recorded with the Wiener Philharmoniker. In the case of Richard Strauss’ symphonic poems, Karajan’s digital remakes at least equalled, if not surpassed, his stupendous recordings from the 1970s.

Eine kleine Nachtmusik (Serenade for strings in G major), K. 525, is a 1787 composition for a chamber ensemble by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The German title means a little serenade, though it is often rendered more literally but less accurately as a little night music. The work is written for an ensemble of 2 violins, viola, & cello with optional double bass, but is often performed by string orchestras

These same forces recorded both . 39 and . 34 back in the 1960's (Mozart: Symphonies No. 9, 40 & 41; Eine kleine Nachtmusik; Serenata notturna (2 CDs)) and while those old readings have an undeniable warmth, both the mastering and the performance are a bit too smooth. These performances, made in the 1980's, are just as warm and glowing, but with a much cleaner sound. Mozart's final Divertimento KV334, a BRILLIANT composition, written for instruments UNLIKE the assembly of the BPO is a genius arrangement of rhythm, tonality; and is almost underrepresented on excellent recordings. Karajan using the BPO, gives a swollen, undifferentiated, non-chamber sound.
