A Slice of the Top is an album by jazz saxophonist Hank Mobley recorded on March 18, 1966, but not released on the Blue Note label until 1979. It features performances by Mobley with Lee Morgan, Kiane Zawadi, Howard Johnson, James Spaulding, McCoy Tyner, Bob Cranshaw and Billy Higgins with arrangements by Duke Pearson. On the original LP, Reggie Workman was mistakenly identified as the bassist.

Slice Of The Top is very high quality artistic endeavour, and a record which is not at all rare, and as a result not at all expensive. It’s called a win-win situation. Mobley continues to be my tenor of choice. At least me and my turntable agree about that, though Tina Brooks offers stiff competition- a little more wayward and unpredictable, but Hank’s maturity and vigour here is at its peak.
Biography by Steve Huey. A beguilingly gifted tenor player in the hard bop vein, and a Blue Note regular who crafted solos with precision and rhythmic vigor. A Slice of the Top. Blue Note.
