Queen of Golden Dogs -the third album from Vessel- was conceived, developed and rendered into life over eighteen months of solitude in rural Wales. In essence, it is an exploration of living a life devoted to uncertainty, curiosity and change. Influenced by a range of writers, the painter Remedios Varo, and a new love, the album is a marked departure from Vessel’s previous work. The world of QoGD is saturated with colour; oscillating between grief, bombast and fierce joy, this is music shot through with both sincerity and irreverence. Whilst traces of his sonic signature remain, there is much.

Queen Of Golden Dogs is Vessel at their most direct and bold, and the result is often overwhelming, sometimes confusing, and always fascinating. The cover really does provide an excellent summation of the music here. This album is beautiful, with loads of pretty orchestral sounds, but it's as if this is a horror game set in a Victorian mansion, giving the feeling that something dark and disturbing is around the corner. Oh and the game's also full of bugs and glitches that make it even more terrifying. Overall, Vessel comes through with an atmospheric and unique experience that is certain to be one of the year's strongest electronic.

Queen of Golden Dogs, as far as I can scry, is about embracing mystery and ambivalence and junking the whole illusion of self. It’s about the uncomfortable realization that your mind is a cluttered cabinet of secret compartments; a contradictory mess of thoughts and feelings that cannot be squashed down into an I or me. It’s an album of lofty ideas, for sure.

Queen Of Golden Dogs is a striking fusion of chamber music and blasted-out electronica, which sometimes resembles a kind of medieval rave music. The results are often playful, though far from an easy listen. The mood is often intense and anarchic. There is also a nod to Maggie Nelson's The Argonauts, a book centred on gender theory and love. Musically, the album is also a constant struggle between polarised emotions-take the cacophony of anxiety and ecstasy in "Argo (For Maggie)," or the dread-fused elation in "Sand Tar Man Star (For Aurellia).
