Mahavishnu Orchestra: Apocalypse by Julian Derry, published on February 26, 2017. Without a doubt, it is this: Apocalypse is a huge musical statement, that draws upon monumental creative energy, to make itself heard, including, the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, with George Martin producing. When Zen Guru Miles Davis told John McLaughlin it was time to find his own path, and Guru Chinmoy had provided him the moniker Musician to the Gods, Mahavishnu must have felt his life had led to that exact point within the eternity of time.
The first recording of the second Mahavishnu Orchestra was a real stretch for John McLaughlin, an encounter with Michael Tilson Thomas and the London Symphony Orchestra. The union wasn't taken seriously at the time, and it ended up harming the reputation of Thomas - a remarkably adventurous young conductor who defied the stuffy classical powers-that-be and thus probably delayed his eventual rise to the top - more than McLaughlin.
TITLE added to MP3 cart. Mahavishnu Orchestra with The London Symphony Orchestra. To have been alive during the time Mahavishnu Orchestra was making music is one of the high points of my musical life. I only wish I could have seen them live (both incarnations). John McLaughlin has always been a spiritual seeker, and nowhere is that more evident than his composition and instrumentation on Apocalypse. His guitar work on this album is STILL stimulating and exciting as well as being amazingly complex even to this day. JM is a true master of his instrument.
