The first half of Codex Obscura Nomina consists of four pieces by Blut Aus Nord that fall under the title Spectral Sonic Waves (The Sound Is an Organic Matter). The long-running French quartet (whose name translates roughly as blood from the north ) makes no bones about its disregard for black metal purism, flat-out declaring its intention to erase all preconceived ideas of black metal- and extreme music in general. Consisting of a single 22-minute track titled Threshold of the Miraculous, the Ævangelist half of this album contains more traditional black metal elements than Blut Aus Nord’s half. But that doesn’t mean that Ævangelist, an American duo that’s been around for way less time than Blut Aus Nord, isn’t being ambitious in its own way. In terms of scope, Threshold of the Miraculous takes an obvious step forward from the band’s most recent album, last year’s Enthrall to the Void of Bliss.

One such act, Illinois/Oregon duo Ævangelist, have been making headway in recent years. So you would think that a split EP where the masters and the students apply their wares, such as the case of today’s Codex Obscura Nomine, would make for a compelling concoction, yes? One thing that can be said about Blut Aus Nord is that their creativity is admirable, and when they fire on all cylinders, they make incredible dark magick. Sadly, another thing that can be said is the quality of their output in recent years has been spotty as hell.

Never did I think I would see these two highly prolific, creative entities on the same title page together, sharing the same canvas, the same release date – or at least, never did it come to mind that such an utterly perfect diabolical union could ever take place because it would be just that – too perfect. I think its thriving and that there are a lot of bands contributing meaningful material to the landscape, but what Ævangelist bring to the table on Codex Obscura Nomina and have been serving up for some years now, is without equal. Lacking a dull moment, Threshold of the Miraculous lives up to its name, as it may very well be the single most complete, patient-sounding material Ævangelist have crafted to date.
