In the days of the Quarrymen, Bill Smith played what was called a tea chest bass, quite standard for skiffle groups. Unhappy that Smith performed at only two shows and rarely turned up for rehearsals, Lennon decided that he should be replaced by his friend Len Garry, "borrowing" Smith's bass in the process.
