Ray of Light is the seventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Madonna, released on March 3, 1998 by Maverick Records. The album is a pop and dance record, yet, it contains elements of electronic music within its composition, making it a departure from her previous work. Additionally, it incorporates several genres and subgenres, including techno and ambient. The album has several themes, including spirituality.

There was no reason Ray of Light should’ve been such a hit. After the collapse of grunge in the mid-90s, the music industry had begun to lean into the perky pubescence of Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. 1998 was the year that TRL launched on MTV, and soon after, Britney Spears would release her teasing teen debut,. Baby One More Time, catalyzing a string of young women-like fellow teens Christina Aguilera and Mandy Moore-to overrun the charts with coy love songs.

As an experimental dance album, Ray of Light is fairly useless. William Orbit doesn’t know enough tricks to fill a whole CD, so he repeats himself something fierce; his most annoying tic is a spaceship-bleep button that he presses compulsively from song to song. But since this is a Madonna album, Orbit’s rinky-dink sound effects have a definite charm; subtlety has never been her friend, and Orbit’s overdressed sonics help Madonna wring gripping music out of her motherhood concept.

Ray of Light is the seventh album by Madonna, released on March 1998. The album is full of oriental themes, as a result of her conversion to Kabbalah, her study of Hinduism and Buddhism ad her practice of Yoga. It spawned five singles: "Frozen", "Ray of Light", "Drowned World/Substitute for Love", "The Power of Good-Bye" and "Nothing Really Matters". Ray of Light sold 20 million copies worldwide.
