Denny Laine (born Brian Frederick Hines; 29 October 1944) is an English musician, singer, and songwriter known as a founder of two major British rock bands: The Moody Blues, with whom he played from 1964 to 1966, and Paul McCartney and Wings, with whom he played from 1971 to 1981. Laine has worked with a variety of artists and groups over a six decade career, and continues to record and perform as a solo artist.

Denny McLain will be remembered for two things: He was the last 30-game winner of the 20th century and that he spent a lot of time in prison. His off-field activities as a player and his post-retirement involvement in a string of felonies have cast long shadows over the Detroit Tigers righthander who dominated the American League in 1968 when he became the first pitcher in 34 years to win 30 games. During his freshman season in the spring of 1959, perhaps the most traumatic event in McLain's life occurred: the death of his father Tom. His father was his inspiration - both in baseball and in playing the organ. He was brought up late in 1963 and went 2-1 with Detroit.

Denny McLain is the last pitcher to win 30 games in a single season. He'll finally be honored with the rest of the 1968 Detroit Tigers this weekend. When I think about it now it’s just a dream, and I wish I could go back in time and do 1968 all over again, says Sharon McLain, Denny's wife, who is battling Parkinson's disease. I remember our house being toilet papered after his victories and Denny placing the marked victory baseballs on the mantle above our fireplace.

In the world of sports, athletes often dedicate their entire lives to reaching the pinnacle of their profession, but for many, life at the top can be short-lived. Sometimes all a player gets to experience at the highest level is one minute on the court, one trip to the plate, one shot on goal or one checkered flag, but more often than not, that fleeting moment in the spotlight is a story all its own. This is One and Done, a FOX Sports series profiling athletes, their paths to success and the stories behind some of sports’ most ephemeral brushes with glory
