An Electric Storm is the debut album by electronic music group White Noise. The band recorded the first two tracks with the intention of producing a single only, but were then persuaded by Chris Blackwell of Island Records to create an entire album. At this point the group had established the Kaleidophon Studio in a flat in Camden Town, London, and spent a year creating the next four tracks. The last track was put together in one day when Island demanded the completion of the album.

In 1969, one year before Kraftwerk’s seminal debut, White Noise unleashed An Electric Storm, with electronic noises and catchy songs bound to stir the listener. White Noise: An Electric Storm Release date: June 1969 Label: Island. Formed by members of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop (the sound effects department), the idea behind White Noise (1969) is immediately clear-electronic effects and samples used to melodic, dramatic and occasionally uncomfortable ends. Initially intended to be a two song single release, record label Island urged White Noise to create a full album.
White Noise's landmark 1969 album An Electric Storm might not the first thing most people think of when considering 1960s music, but there are few records anywhere tied more intrinsically to the moment of their creation. Yet knowledge of White Noise's academic or technical background does little to prepare the listener for the widescale psychedelic mayhem of An Electric Storm. Despite its brief 35-minute running length, the album covers an enormous amount of stylistic ground, as White Noise overlay their fractured pop songcraft with musique concrète effects, weird bits of radio theater, and long stretches of gothic horror.
At Kaleidophon with David Vorhaus, Brian Hodgson and others, Delia helped create the seminal album An Electric Storm. Many sounds have never been heard - by humans. Some soundwaves you don't hear - but they reach you. 'Storm-Stereo' techniques combine singers, instrumentalists and complex electronic sound. Welcome to the world of the Frequency Shifter, Signal Generator and Azimuth Co-ordinator.
Electric Storm 50. This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this seminal album by trio White Noise. Released on Island Records in June 1969, An Electric Storm has been cited as the first electronic pop album in the UK and has influenced many artists over the decades. White-Noise-coverIn recognition of the anniversary, electronic music charity Delia Derbyshire Day are organising an event in November and have announced their new creative project Electric Storm 50 which has been developed to work with young people aged 16-30 years.
White Noise is the brain child of American born David Vorhaus who studied both classical music and electronics and Brit Delia Derbyshire. Their desire to create a new style by combining music with science lead them to become some of the earliest pioneers of electronic music. After a year, island still had not heard a finished recording and insisted they complete album within a matter of days. An Electric Storm was released in 1969 with no gigs or interviews at all. They were all boffins. It blows me away, I listen to this music and I don’t know how it is made, what is a frequency shifter, a signal generator, an azimuth co-ordinator or EMS VCS3?
