Boy is the debut album by Irish rock band U2. It was released on 20 October 1980 by Island Records and was produced by Steve Lillywhite. Boy contains many songs from the band's 40-song catalogue at the time, including two tracks that were re-recorded from their original versions on their debut release, the EP Three. Boy was recorded from July to September 1980 at Dublin's Windmill Lane Studios, which became U2's chosen recording location during the 1980s.

The songs may occasionally show some weakness - the driving "I Will Follow," the dark "An Cat Dubh," and the shimmering "The Ocean" stand out among the sonic textures - yet the band's musical and lyrical vision keep Boy compelling until the finish.

I wouldn't worry about U-2 selling out because I know. It is very rare that a first album is truly and spectacularly brilliant. For the most part, first albums tend to be clumsy, awkward affairs that often do not reflect the capabilities of the artists involved. Every now and then, however, a first album comes along that creates a precedent for the remainder of an artist or group's career. Led Zeppelin I comes to mind, as does Pearl Jam's Ten. Boy is also in this elite echelon

Boy was U2’s first commercially released full length album. The album was recorded in 1980 in Dublin. Originally U2 had approached Martin Hannett, who produced 11 O’Clock Tick Tock, to produce the Boy album as well. However, the suicide of Ian Curtis, the front man of Joy Division in May 1980 left Hannett unwilling to step into the role. Instead, U2 would approach Steve Lillywhite, a young producer who had gained some notoriety producing Siouxsie and the Banshees, Peter Gabriel, Ultravox, and The Psychedelic Furs. The design of the original album cover was by Steve Averill working with Bruno-Christian Tilley, the in house designer at Island Records, The cover artwork for the album’s initial release was a photograph by Hugo McGuinness of a young boy, with his arms behind his head. The young boy was Peter Rowen, the younger brother of Bono’s friend Guggi.
