Something in Common is an album by saxophonist Houston Person and bassist Ron Carter that was released by Muse in 1989.
Chemistry is an album by saxophonist Houston Person and bassist Ron Carter recorded in late 2015 and released on the HighNote label the following year. At face value, that is certainly what you get. The deception enters into the equation with just how masterful and nuanced Person and Carter are in each song.
Ron Carter- the world’s most recorded jazz bassist - reveals the stories behind outstanding dates from his monumental career. HOUSTON PERSON & RON CARTER Something in Common (Muse, 1990) Person, tenor saxophone; Carter, bass Houston’s style is one I wish more tenor players would examine, not just because of the sound he has but how he plays a song’s melody and knows the verse. It’s critical to be able to understand what the song was meant to do by the writer. If your view of it is different, so be it, but at least you know what the intent was. Houston always knows that. I treasure every moment with him, because he plays right.
Person's sax presents a spare yet hauntingly clear melody line throughout and Carter supplies a solid bass line that is at times as melodic as the sax. Carter's riff on Mack the Knife alone is worth the price of the album. This is thinking people's jazz, but still rhythmically free and emotionally warm. Person and Carter complement each other so well, they should have recorded way more music. As it is, this in an incredible box set worth every penny. Why is this box set out of print?
Saxophonist Houston Person and bassist Ron Carter have a duo partnership that goes back at least as far as their two 1990 recordings, Something in Common and Now's the Time! Since those albums, the legendary artists have released several more duo collaborations, each one a thoughtful and minimalist production showcasing their masterful command of jazz standards, blues, and bop. The duo's 2016 effort, the aptly titled Chemistry, is no exception and once again finds Person and Carter communing over a well-curated set of jazz standards.

Houston Person and Ron Carter wouldn’t kno. quarter of a century after the beginning of their collaboration, the tenor saxophonist and the double bassist (both now in their eighties) continue their beautiful partnership. For Remember Love, they climb up the Everest of the American Songbook; they’re themes that have been played a thousand times by the whole world, yet the warmth of the duo’s interpretation makes them fascinating.
