Stakes Is High is De La Soul's fourth full-length album, released on July 2, 1996. But it's under these conditions that De La offered an album that was not only sonically excellent and creative and pure, but an album with the year's most relevant and prescient message. The stakes were indeed high.

Throughout most of the album, De La Soul delve through their concerns with the state of hip-hop at the time, including the culture’s commercialisation and gangsta rap. The well-known title track dives the most into their frustrations with hip hop and the culture, and even to this day, still holds up very well. Stakes is High isn’t bombarded with a lot of guest appearances, but the satisfactory amount of guests did their thing. Common appears on The Bizness, another highlight that takes shots at the music industry and fake rappers; and the Chicago MC delivered some real nice bars. The star of that song is Posdnuos tho, who came through super smooth with his verse. R&B duo Zhané appears on 4 More, which is one of the album’s softer moments, touching on relationships and trying to get with women.
