I went into overdrive myself after hearing that HI-BALL CD for the 40th time by getting the group's 2005 3-CD box set POPCORN as my next Coctails CD. This set is a collection of selected album tracks, rare and special compilation recordings and god knows what documenting the group evolution from the simple to the thoroughly blended. 56 tracks on 3 CDs! Where to freakin' start?!

Popcorn Box 3-CD box set (Carrot Top). Contemporary Musicians: Profiles of the People in Music 2006 "2003 saw another release from the Sea and Cake, followed by a 2004 Coctails reunion, opening up for the reunited Pixies in Chicago. The Coctails USA Label site.

Popcorn" is an early synth-pop instrumental, composed by Gershon Kingsley in 1969 and first appearing on his album Music to Moog By. It was recorded at the Audio Fidelity Records label in New York City. The title may refer to the short staccato or sharp "popping" sound used, or to pop music and its being "corny", . The title is generally written as one word, although some single sleeves (such as the one illustrated) present it as two words, "Pop Corn".

The Cocktails are one of those rare groups that combines many musical genders and successfully blends them into a coherent individualistic sound and style; they take free form jazz, avant guard influences, Brian Eno-styled ambient, lounge, old garage rock, DIY esthetics, a bit of ethnic music, a small pinch of Raymond Scott and stir it all up with a good balance of friendly humor. That is as basic you can get to describe their “sound”. As with any multi-tasking artists, fans and critics are forced to point out a single album as a launching pad to easily enter this band’s world to the novice and those fingers usually point to the 1992 compilation THE EARLY HI-BALL YEARS: a collection of the band’s early years of 1989 to 1992, just as the group would set their musical blender to overdrive. I went into overdrive myself after hearing that HI-BALL CD for the 40th time by getting the group’s 2005 3-CD box set POPCORN as my next Coctails CD. This set is a collection of selected album tracks, rare and special compilation recordings and god knows what documenting the group evolution from the simple to the thoroughly blended. 56 tracks on 3 CDs! Where to freakin’ start?! Well, in a selected random order: ‘Working Holiday’ is a fun finger snapping number with the title rhythmically chanted like a pleasant summer camp sing a long (complete with a vibraphone…I’m a sucker for those damned things); ‘Fennel’ is a short collaboration with eerie illustrator Dame Darcy; ‘Abba Dabba Doo Dance’ is a cover of an old garage 45 with a guest lead singer getting his ‘drunk’ on; ‘Luke? Luke?’ contains a Star Wars sample; ‘Holiday In Paradise’ combines lounge and Xmas with a strumming banjo; the band pays tribute to DEVO by covering ‘Corporate Theme’; ‘Spinning’ take on melancholy with a musical saw and vibes; the ambient ‘Circles’, heavy on the vibes and old drum machine; the group sing praises of donuts in polka style with ‘Donut Shoppe’ (complete with a false start!); they do the Beach Boys live-in-your-living-room thing with ‘Wheels’ and, what do ya know!, there’s a nifty cover of Raymond Scott’s chestnut ‘Penguin/Powerhouse’!! …and if THAT wasn’t enough, you’ll discover there’s a equally elaborate visual scale to the group as well when you read the booklet; they dressed alike like a lounge version of the Monkees, produced their own plush dolls, drew their own comics, single covers and an endless array of flyers! Even though the group retired in New Years Eve 1995, their popularity continues unabated with semi-yearly reunion tours, a book of flyers and this box set. All this “overkill/overdrive” jazz may sound scary, but let that and the fans scare you away from the fun and productive sounds of The Coctails!
