Vanguard I Want to Live.
I Want to Live (оригинал Skillet). In a grave of roses, while the night is closing in. My soul is so cold, but I want to live again. I know you'll come to me, I wait in misery. Now, I'm free to start again. The way I want to live (to live) and breathe (and breathe). The way I want that's right for me.
Alto saxophonist Steve Coleman’s Live at the Village Vanguard, Vol. I (The Embedded Sets) is his first live release in over 15 years. Unlike his two most recent releases, Morphogenesis (NPR Critics Poll album of 2017) and Synovial Joints (New York Times jazz album of 2015), both of which are highly orchestrated, Coleman’s recent goal has been to perform as spontaneously as possible, often completely extemporaneously, and yet still retain form and structure.

For a good while I disregarded any album that wasn’t the cohesive result of a musician locking himself up in the studio in sake of a portrayal of his mindset at the time. I disregarded bootlegs, compilations, and especially live albums. But if you really want to get a grasp on the genre, listening to live albums will give you a different kind of insight and enjoyment. They will let you take a look inside the performers’ heads, as they feed off the audience and try their best to convey what’s on their mind in a particular night. No second chances, no studio overdubs, just raw emotion and improvisatory genius. This 1961 performance at New York’s Village Vanguard backed up by drummer Paul Motian and bassist Scott LaFaro is perhaps the high mark of Evans’s career, and also one of the most influential recordings in jazz history.
