Or maybe it was just that it was getting hard to distinguish Kansas from Foreigner and Journey. In any case, Vinyl Confessions was Kansas' first album since their debut not to go gold.
And Vinyl Confessions should be considered a classic Kansas album. Play The Game Tonight" has a great hook, but maintains some progressive integrity. And Dave Hope on "Windows" simply drops my jaw as he just powers away on the bass. Kansas was on the brink of a total breakdown at the time this album was released. Steve Walsh was gone, Steinhardt would be also just a few months later, and Livgren and bassist Dave Hope would leave after the next album. Livgren already seemed to be only modestly interested in recording by this time.
