Years of Refusal is the ninth studio album by English alternative rock singer Morrissey. It was released on 16 February 2009 in the UK by record label Decca and on 17 February 2009 in the US by Lost Highway. It was the last album completed by producer Jerry Finn before his death. The album is also notable for being the first Morrissey album since Your Arsenal not to feature Alain Whyte on lead guitar, who is permanently replaced by Jesse Tobias.

The album was recorded at Conway Studios (Los Angeles, United States) and it features musical compositions by frequent collaborators: Boz Boorer, Alain Whyte and Jesse Tobias. It was produced by Jerry Finn, who worked on You Are the Quarry.

Years of Refusal is no different, with Tobias, Boorer, and Alain Whyte co-writing all of the songs on the album. Each bring their own particular flavor to the mix, with Whyte providing more of the classic Morrissey sound, Boorer more of a proto-punk, rockabilly feel, like a less stoic Richard Hawley, and Tobias a hard-edged pop sensibility. Ultimately, the sum of these parts turns out to be greater than any one individual contribution. Plus, without looking at the liner notes, you’d be hard pressed to guess who penned each song.

Years Of Refusal stands as the best of his post-comeback releases and it's not difficult to see why, containing as it does his best songs since God was a boy. The problem for many people – this writer included – is that too often Morrissey has sacrificed tunes in favour of a lyrical verbosity that takes precedence over everything else. So while it remained a joy to listen to Morrissey's witticisms, waspish put-downs and the aural equivalent of Kenneth Williams' rolling eyes, flared nostrils and 'o'-shaped mouth, they didn't really amount to much without the sonic.

But events settled into a well-worn groove following Ringleader of the Tormentors' release: another pointless compilation album, another round of controversy about his views on immigration, another visit to the law courts. And now, there's Years of Refusal, on which normal service is resumed. Love never comes or doesn't exist; depression and suicide get a song each; the legal profession cops it in the neck yet again.

However, what makes Years Of Refusal stand out as a great Morrissey album isn't the usual dose of miserabalist poetry - even 2006's so-so Ringleader Of The Tormentors had some classic lines (. There are exploding kegs between my legs"). He frequently returns to well-worn themes of mortality and paranoia, but here there's a palpable sense of anger exuding from his vitriolic put-downs. Then came an arm around my shoulder, well surely the hand holds a revolver?" he seethes on album closer 'I'm OK By Myself', before ending the album by crooning: "I don't need you and I never have!"
