Sinking is the second studio album by British electronica band The Aloof, released by East West Records in the United Kingdom on 27 May 1996. Following the rave-influenced style of the group's debut album Cover the Crime (1994), Sinking brought the band into a darker, more mellow direction, as the result of the group's desire to deliver a "band" feel, aided by the members' newfound disillusionment with club culture.

Not quite as dark as the premiere Aloof LP, Sinking adds a contemplative earthiness gained from the blues and film music, especially on "Wish You Were Here" (not a Floyd cover), while the orchestral flair of closing track "The Last Stand" show the Aloof working through a variety of inspirations with a surplus of good ideas to back them up.

I bought the Europe version of the CD but soon found out later that the Disc itself is the German version which omits 'Space Dust' and is spoilt by too many versions of 'One Night Stand'. So I now have a CD that doesn't play the track list on the cover. I too was lucky enough to catch The Aloof perform live supported by the excellent 'Baby Fox' who of course did a remix of 'One Night Stand'. Rispondi Avvertimi Helpful.

One of the finest examples of downtempo and groove. The classics "Wish You were", "One Night Stand" and "Losing It" echo layers of elctronic seduction and vice. "Abuse" is a stunning bass-driven dance track that will always be able to shake some butts. The only flaw I found is that the tracks tend to get a tad long and repetitive but this is small weakness in a fantastic album.
An album that on its release in 1996 truly opened my heart for non danceable electronic music. It is a style on its own. This is the only album with this style. I had the very very pleasure of enjoying them live, with drummer, bassplayer, guitarist. The next release (Seeking pleasure, 1998) was a drastic change to more guitar based dance music, also very great (like u2, they outstand in chancing styles all the time). And after that, they got dumped by their label for being un-commercial. They continued for a new label to their most electronic club-like album ever (This constant chase for thrills, 1999), with again a few ambient pearls. Since 3 years I didnt hear from them, I'm sad to say. So I keep on playing 'Sinking'. They will not be dumped by me!
This could be a really fantastic album. The Aloof made trip hop based beats/songs in a 'gothic' way (as we used to say in the beginning of the 80's). they make songs which have lots and lots of sounds, delays and reverbs, and they build them up to very large monuments of strange feelings of loneliness and depression. crazy. best song is the title song and "stuck on the shelf". the lack is that after a while they run out of good ideas and struggle themselves to get the thing done over 72 minutes.
