Paint It Black" was one of the greatest Rolling Stones singles, reaching number one on both sides of the Atlantic in mid-1966. It also entirely broke free of the blues and R&B influences that had colored their 1965 smashes like "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Get off of My Cloud. No doubt that "Paint It, Black" (never understood the comma in the title) appeals to goths and lots of pretend teenaged vampires. I find this song curiously boring after all these years. It's almost like the Stones are sinking into self-parody years before they actually did. Ditto the overstated "Stupid Girl", which joyously proclaims Jagger's problems with 'some girls'. There's a nostalgic charm to both of these cuts, and Brian's sitar on "Paint It, Black" was interesting at the time. I wouldn't put either of these songs on any 'Best of the Rolling Stones' collection.
